Who can register a .hu domain?
A .hu domain has been open to any legal person or to a national of an EU, EEA, EFTA or Council of Europe state, or a state bordering Hungary, and to a natural person with a Hungarian residence permit. Since 2025 the registry has widened this: an applicant anywhere can register if it carries on an activity that justifies using the name.

A company or an EEA national qualifies straightforwardly. Under the 2025 opening, an applicant outside that group can also register, but it must be able to show an economic or other activity that justifies the .hu name if the registry or registrar asks. Where that is awkward, a trustee in the eligible group is used.
The rules below are drawn from the .hu Domain Registration Policy published by the Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (ISZT) and its Criteria Regarding the Domain Applicants.

The policy lists who may apply. The categories are broad and were broadened further in 2025.
- Any legal person (a company or organisation), historically without a residency test.
- A natural person who is a national of an EU, EEA, EFTA or Council of Europe member state, or of a state bordering Hungary.
- A natural person with a Hungarian permanent or temporary residence permit.
- Since 2025, individuals and companies from anywhere, provided they carry on an activity that justifies use of a .hu domain.

The activity that justifies the name
The 2025 opening is not unconditional. The applicant must carry on, or be starting, an economic or other activity that justifies using the particular .hu domain. In practice this means a link between the name and what you do: a brand you trade under, a project, a publication. The registry can ask you to show it. A speculative registration with no activity behind it is the case this wording is written to catch.
What the .hu rules imply about trustees
The policy does not mention trustees. It defines the applicant as the eligible and responsible party.
The applicant is the holder
The party named on the application is the domain holder ISZT recognises. Under a trustee arrangement that is the trustee. Your rights are contractual.
Eligibility and activity are continuing
The registry can review eligibility and the justifying activity during the life of the domain, and can suspend or delete where the holder no longer qualifies. A trustee that stays in the eligible group and can point to a justifying activity keeps the domain compliant.
The applicant accepts Hungarian dispute rules
Applicants submit to the .hu Alternative Dispute Resolution Forum and the Advisory Board's decisions on priority and naming. The trustee carries that on your behalf.
The 2025 opening may make a trustee unnecessary
Transfer and exit
A .hu domain changes holder through the registrar with the current holder's consent. The incoming holder must be eligible under the policy.
- Confirm you or the incoming holder qualify, including the activity test.
- The current holder, the trustee, must consent to the transfer.
- The domain must be active and outside a dispute.
How registration works
You apply through a registrar
Registration is through an ISZT-accredited registrar. Most .hu registrations are immediate; some names go through a priority or objection window under the Advisory Board rules.
The application declaration
The applicant declares eligibility, accepts the policy and the dispute rules, and warrants that the registration does not infringe others' rights. False statements are a ground for deletion.
Name format
A .hu label is 2 to 63 characters using letters, digits and hyphens, with Hungarian-accented internationalised domains supported. Some second-level names and terms tied to Hungarian public bodies are restricted.
What the public lookup shows
The .hu Whois shows organisation holders in full and redacts personal data for natural persons in line with EU data-protection rules. Under a trustee arrangement the trustee's details are what appear.
If you do not qualify: two routes
Use an eligible entity
Because any legal person can hold a .hu, an EEA company you already control is often enough, with no Hungarian entity needed.
Use a trustee
Where you have no eligible entity and the activity test is awkward, a trustee in the eligible group holds the domain and licenses its use to you. Compare providers that cover .hu.

Frequently asked questions
Can a non-EU company register a .hu domain?
Any legal person has historically been able to, and the 2025 opening extends registration to applicants worldwide who can show an activity that justifies the name. A trustee is a fallback where that is difficult.
What is the activity requirement?
The applicant must carry on, or be starting, an economic or other activity that justifies use of the specific .hu name. The registry can ask for evidence.
Do I need to be Hungarian or live in Hungary?
No. A residence permit is only one of several ways a natural person can qualify, and organisations have never needed one.
Can I move a .hu domain away from a trustee later?
Yes, with the trustee's consent and an eligible incoming holder. The constraint is the contract, not the registry.
